Information About Berries and a Berry Fruit List
The botanical definition of a berry is that it’s a fruit produced from a single ovary. Most varieties of berries grow wild and several are cultivated all over the world. Berries generally have one or more carpels with a thin covering and fleshy interiors. The seeds of berries are usually embedded within the flesh of the ovary. Unlike most fruits, when a berry fruit ripens, the entire fruit is edible. It’s important to note however that not all berry fruits are edible. A few species of berry fruit are actually poisonous such as the fruits of the deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) and the fruits of the potato (Solanum tuberosum). Most berries are juicy, bright colored fruits with a round or semi-oblong shape. Although berries may contain many seeds, they do not have a stone or pit. While some berries have pulp surrounding their seeds, other berries (such as peppers) have space instead of pulp. Berries range in flavor from sweet to sour, and some (such as hot peppers) can be very spicy.
Berries provide a great source of many nutrients with nutrient properties ranging from each type of berry. Some berries are an excellent source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are very potent free radical scavengers that help to prevent and cure illnesses. Although the antioxidants in berries differ with each type of fruit, berries are one of the highest sources of antioxidants.
