A citrus fruit is a fruit that grows on flowering plants in the Rutaceae family. It is believed that citrus fruit originated in the Southwest Asia. There are several different types of citrus fruits and most of them are now cultivated in many parts of the world. Citrus trees need a sunny, humid environment in order to grow and produce fruit. Most tropical regions of the world provide the ideal environment for citrus fruit trees.
Since ancient times, citrus fruit have been cultivated for unique tastes and nutrients. Most citrus fruits can be eaten fresh with easy preparation. The most common way to eat citrus fruit is to peel the rind and split the fruit into segments. Grapefruit is typically cut in half and eaten with a spoon. Citrus fruit, especially oranges and lemons, is commonly used to make a refreshing juice drink. Orange juice and lemonade are a favorite drink in many parts of the world. Citrus fruit provides a great source of many nutrients, especially vitamin C. Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient, so it’s required by the human body. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, so it helps to prevent and cure illnesses such as cancer. Vitamin C is essential for many functions in the body. It is needed for the growth and repair of tissue and also to help the body make collagen which is an important protein for skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is also essential for wound healing, and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth. The white portion of citrus fruit, between the rind and the flesh, has a high concentration of disease fighting phytochemicals. So when preparing citrus fruit, it’s more beneficial to leave on some of the white portion.
