Although there are 4 main sources of fruit classification (botany, culinary, cultural, and conventional), the conventional classification is a general reference and is the one most often used. The conventional classification identifies fruit as a structure of a plant that contains its seeds. Botany, the scientific study of plants, is a realm of science that encompasses all plant life including algae and fungi. In botany, the term “fruit” applies to a wide range of plants. The botanical definition of fruit identifies it as a part of a flowering plant that grows from specific tissues of the flower. The culinary classification of fruit is mostly concerned with how a plant structure can be used for food preparation. Under the culinary definition, a fruit is a plant structure that is edible, sweet, and resembles a fruit. The culinary classification also includes some vegetable-fruits such as rhubarb. The cultural classification combines both the conventional and culinary classifications to identify whether a plant structure is a fruit or not. Although the conventional classification of fruit is the most simple to use, it includes all fruits even those which are not edible. On this website, unless specified otherwise, each list of fruit is based on the culinary classification of fruit. (See also, Classification of Fruit.)
