Pome Fruit

Information About Pomes and a Pome Fruit List

A pome fruit is a type of fruit that’s produced by flowering plants in the subfamily Maloideae of the Rosaceae family.  Pome fruit trees are deciduous.  They thrive in the sun and have a dormant winter period which requires cold temperatures in order for the tree to properly break dormancy in the spring.  Most pome fruit grow from spring blossom and are harvested from late summer to late autumn.   Pome fruit are also classified as accessory fruits.  An accessory fruit contains one or more carpels which are surrounded by accessory tissue.  All pome fruit have a central  “core” that contains several small seeds which are surrounded by a tough membrane.  The membrane is encased in an edible layer of flesh called accessory tissue.   The accessory tissue of pome fruit comprises the largest area of the fruit and is the part which is most edible.

Pome fruit are a good source of several nutrients, but are an especially great source of pectin.  Pectin is a soluble dietary fiber.  There are 2 types of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble.  Insoluble fiber stays in tact when it travels through the digestive system because it can’t be assimilated into water or other liquids.  Soluble fiber is soluble in water, and when it combines with water it creates a gel like substance which is very beneficial for the digestive system. Pectin encourages bowel regularity which is essential for good health.  The regular consumption of pectin has been attributed to reduced blood cholesterol levels.   Pectin increases the viscosity in the intestinal tract, which leads to a reduced absorption of cholesterol from bile or food.  Pome fruit and citrus fruit are a very good source of pectin.  Althogh the flesh of pome fruit contains most of the fruit’s pectin, the skin of pome fruit has a concentration of other nutrients including insoluble fiber and phytochemicals.  Most pome fruit can be eaten with the skin intact.  Whenever possible, it’s best to eat pome fruit that’s been cultivated using organic methods.
