Why Some Vegetables Are Classified as Fruits and a Vegetable-Fruit List
A vegetable-fruit is a type of fruit that’s most often consumed as a vegetable. Vegetable-fruits have the botanical characteristics of a fruit, but most of them lack sweet flavor even when they’re ripe. The sweet flavor of fruit (or can be made sweet with sugar) is one of the characteristics for the culinary definition of fruit. From the culinary perspective, although fruits such as lemons and grapefruit are sour and tart, sugar can be added to them making them more useful for fruit recipes. Even though some vegetables are sweet like fruits (such as rhubarb and beets), they’re still classified as vegetables under the culinary definition. Like all edible fruits, vegetable-fruits are very nutritious and provide the added bonus of having no negative effect on blood sugar levels when consumed in larger quantities. Below is a list of edible vegetable-fruits.
